Be a Nice Human

Guys. I’m struggling.

It’s a very first world kind of struggle – I totally see that. It’s not like I’m struggling for food, money, health or anything like that. I’m struggling with how I see people treating one another. I’m struggling with how I see people talking to one another. I’m struggling with social media and how that platform is turning into a very antagonistic, hurtful, and hostile platform.

Quite frankly, it breaks my heart.

The other day, I found a shirt that has been a phrase I regularly repeat in my profession and life. It’s a simple phrase:

Be a nice human.

It’s a short phrase that I so often share with our younger generation because, honestly, we could all use a lot more nice humans right now.

The last few months have been difficult for the entire world. Some more than others. You would think that in a time like this people would come together and support each other. Maybe they are – but that certainly isn’t what the news or social media display. It doesn’t matter the political party…I’ve seen the hurtful and hostile things said on all sides.

Again, it breaks my heart. It breaks my heart for the people that are going through some very real emotions right now – only to have them dismissed by others. It breaks my heart that our future generations are seeing the way that adults are acting towards one another.

I hope that this message comes off as intended. Not judgemental – but reflective. Reflective on how we are treating one another in an already difficult time. Reflective on how the things that we are saying to others may be hurtful during a time that causes so many people anxiety. Reflective on how our social media presence may affect those around us. Simply, I challenge all of us (myself included) just to reflect on the kind of human we are being towards others.

I’m not perfect – by any means. So far from it that I’m not even sure where it is. But I keep this in my mind every day. Just be a good human. Try to be a good human.

Be nice. Be kind. Be true.

I hope I can be that kind of human because, well, the world needs a little more nice humans.
